In the world of interior design, "bigger is better" is the current mantra for bathrooms. Large format tiles—defined as any tile where at least one side is longer than 15 inches—are transforming cramped, dated bathrooms into sleek, spa-like retreats. By rethinking the scale of your flooring and walls, you can fundamentally change the perception of your space.
Creating the Illusion of Space
It may seem counterintuitive, but large tiles actually make small rooms feel bigger. When you use small tiles, you create a grid-like pattern with dozens of grout lines. This "visual noise" can make a room feel busy and enclosed. Large format tiles minimize these interruptions, creating a seamless, expansive look that draws the eye across the floor without distraction.
The Practicality of Fewer Grout Lines
Aside from the aesthetic benefits, the most practical reason to choose large tiles is the reduction in maintenance. Grout is porous and is the most difficult part of a floor to keep clean, especially in a moisture-heavy environment like a bathroom. By reducing the number of grout lines by 50% or more, you spend significantly less time scrubbing and more time enjoying your home.
Versatility in Application
Large format tiles aren't just for the floor. Using the same large tiles on the floor and extending them up the walls of a walk-in shower creates a high-end, cohesive "envelope" effect. This design trick is used by luxury hotels to create a sense of grandeur. Whether you choose a marble-look porcelain or a minimalist concrete finish, the continuity of the large surface area highlights the beauty of the material itself.
Precision and Professionalism
Installing larger tiles requires a perfectly level subfloor and professional expertise to ensure there is no "lippage" (where one tile edge is higher than another). However, the result is a sophisticated, clean-lined finish that adds significant value to your home. It is a modern solution that bridges the gap between classic materials and contemporary architecture.
